Opening titles review - Kate

Skins Season 1

The opening credit sequence for skins is self standing and is seperate from the episodes however the character shown in the last bit of footage in the sequence is the main character for the episode in the one it is a blonde female teenager called Cassy. In thesequence we learn about the characters and what they do in their free time  i.e hang out with each other , smoke , drugs and party. the audience also learns about the setting for the t.v drama - urban landscape in the Uk .

The sequence is fast moving indicating its target audience is at young people , this sequence is edited together by fast reflecting establishing shots and as the music picks up pace the charcaters come into the shots with key parts from the episodes in all the shots the characters are moving and even the sky and background is this shows that its happening now and also conveys that the characters are like this everyday and have lots of fast moving drama in their lifes. The sequence  ends with the title of the show created with smoke and then to typeography.

Unlike Grey's anatomy this wouldnt work for our opening but work wells for a TV drama.

Titling - 90210 - Helena

Credit opening secence of 90120

90210 is an American drama set in beverly hills.

diffrent from most openning scenes they use shape and signs to create the '9' '0' '1' '2' 0' all sepratly in diffrent cuts.
all of the numbers come from the suroundings and shows the atractions of beverly hills, for example the beach and woman doing a handstand in the sand to create the number one.
I do like the way the opening is setting the scene an establishing shot create with several clips and mid shots.

I think that works really well and this could of been a possibility but would of taken a lot of time as commemorate is a very long word and we would have to come up with a lot of things that had the letters that went with the movie.
As we didn't have a lot of time and we didn't think this would go with the right type of film so we went for something more original and simple.

Opening titles review and research - Kate

Grey's Anatomy

Grey's Anatomy is an American TV drama set in a hospital in Seattle USA .

As opposed to a black screen , the credits appear on a montage of moving images.

The images convey that the main character is a  young female surgeon.

This opening title is a simple show of contrasts between surgeon life and her own personal life , indicating that they are the same thing i.e contrast between eyelash curlers and surgical equipment. Each shot flows into the next , such as the shot with the liquid from the  IV drip poring out and cutting to a martini glass being filled (they look as if there from the same shot) .

The  first two title credits are placed on blank  backgrounds and move as the image changes into the next  this puts emphasis  the actors name. The other credits are on fast moving backgrounds some slide down the screen and others zoom in and out , the final credit has the same effect as the first two as it is who the show is written by. Each title is central to the screen.

The non diegetic music adds to the theme about it being a very dramatic  and  unpredictable hospital and the staff with in. " nobody knows where they might end up nobody knows" .

From analysing this opening I dont think it would work for out opening however we have taken a few similar ideas : Music and titles.

Matching up similarities between props - we could of done this with a gun and a pen if we had kept the idea of wrighting a letter.

Match on action - not a complete match on action as the on screen objects are different , I really like this idea that is being used throughout the opening tites.

Additonal Note :

Just watched an episode of Grey's Anatomy from season 8 - the title credit first fadeds to blood red  carrying on from the flashin ambulance lights and then to white with black lettering and then to back to red - to symbolise TRAUMA - \This for of titling would of worked really well with our film! - would of been great to see it before it has such an impact on the audience , would also reflect that people have been hurt.

Young people Don't read newspapers- Kate

After our difficulty creating our own newspaper we decided to use a text message . Although it is a shame that we couldn't use the newspaper as it was very realistic , but after searching the internet it seems that a mobile phone was a better idea in the first place as it is the 21st century and an article in the Guardian reveals that young people are less likely to read a newspaper. This is also personal experience as I only read the newspaper when I know that there is something interesting inside , I also don't know many people my age who do read the newspaper. However if we did go with the newspaper headline idea it would still make sense as the headline is very bold and important.

Day 2 Filming Thursday 7th March - Kate

On Thursday 7th of March We Completed the filming side of "Commemorate"

Helena and I Like last time discussed what we would film first

- Olivia  Getting out of the walking in to the school.
- Drive down to the school.
-close ups of getting out the car - We took lots of shots from different angles .

- Bed room scene - We Changed costume , we did go with our original idea for the  costume which was a more adult looking uniform to casual day clothing - we couldn't make the second uniform fit in with the shots.

- To finish we focused on the main characters facial expression this is KEY as we have no talking , we need to get through to the audience that something has shocked the character.

We also had to change our props. - News paper to letter to our final choice - a phone (text) .

On Thursday we achieved finishing the film with out a group member - Max was unable to attend this filming day. With just two group members it was a struggle but we worked to our maximum and got everything completed .

 - Staff at School and Health and Safety ( florescent jacket )
Louise McKechnie - Discussion of rules we have to follow while filming at the school.

 -Inside the car.

-Dealing with weather conditions

Action shots -Getting out of the car - I had to remember what side I held my bag to carry on continuity with the footage we shot on Sunday.

Tracking shot following the car down to the school

Finished filming at the school!!!!.

First costume , hair and makeup change .

-Testing out different places to film from.

Use of Mirrors -This was hard to get accurate as getting the camera at the right angle was tricky we ended up with lots of footage we couldn't use as you could see the camera in the mirror but in the end we achieved the standard and enough shots that we wanted !.

Update - Helena

We have started editing & we have enough footage to complete our film. Next week we are going to concentrate on foleys and uploading tests we did before we started to film.

The first filming we did on Sunday the 3rd didn't go as well as Thursday and a few issues with speed have become a problem. I don't think it will take to long to sort out.
We did all the foleys for the school scene on the day we just need to create them for the car beginning and end.
We also need to record the voices in the car.

Foleys that we need to do;

Car door
Noise of foot steps on concrete
Car driving
Noise of front door closing
Phone going off
Cup being put down
Door in Olivia's room.

Foleys that need to be done;

Finished Filming - Helena and Kate

We have finished filming everything!!
Now that we have finished tomorrow and the rest of our time will be spent editing.

Brain storm halfway through - Helena and Kate.

As seen on post before. Due to news paper not printing we brain stroke a few ideas.

After this we then brain storm we then had issues with the way it would look be couldn't find the newspaper in small.

So text message worked out a very good idea as Oliver was a teenager at the time.

Change of outfit - Helena

We decided to change Oliva's outfit for the last part, we had the issue of not knowing weather she was going to school that day or just herd and as we plan it for just hearing we did her in the morning getting ready.
Due to printers at college not printing well and jamming we had to change the news paper to a text to a mobile.

Filming :) - Helena

Kate and I filming, right this very second!!!

Pre-Planning Day 1 Filming - Kate

" The Curious Incident of the dog in the night time"

While reading over Max's Synopsis I made a link with a book I have read - " The Curious incident of the dog in the night time " by Mark Haddon , This book has had many great reviews and is currently being made into a film .

About the book

-the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a murder mystery novel like no other. The detective, and narrator, is Christopher Boone. Christopher is fifteen and has Asperger's Syndrome. He knows a very great deal about maths and very little about human beings. He loves lists, patterns and the truth. He hates the colours yellow and brown and being touched. He has never gone further than the end of the road on his own, but when he finds a neighbour's dog murdered he sets out on a terrifying journey which will turn his whole world upside down.- amazon

The main character in the story Christopher investigates in to who killed Wellington the dog , Our character Olivia does a similar investigation with the shootings at the school.

Photographs second part - Kate

Here are some photographs of our possible setting change for newspaper scene. - Kate's bedroom.

Before. -   Lots of cans and bottles on top - Distracting for viewer and unprofessional .

After - Fewer object on table but enough to make it personal to the character and convincing - Still some object to be removed before filming .

Character reflected in mirror - This will be hard to film , trying to to get the camera in the mirror!

Second problem that we could come across - I have a balcony with large windows - refection in the windows - we could close the curtains however this will make it dark in the room and this scene is set in the morning .

 - After - Props - Chair , Mug , Newspaper

- Angles that we can film from

- Space around to film

Location choice

We have decided that it might be a good idea to film in a bedroom for the second scene after the black screen. While discussing the filming for the day on Sunday 3rd we realised that the dressing table in my bedroom would look good in this film.
The first part of our opening is set in a countryside boarding school- my bed room has a balcony and countryside view so this links in well . However we will still look into filming in the Kitchen .

Our plan for Thursdays filming- Helena

Plan for Thursday;

So on Thursday Kate and I our of to the boarding school to film the outside.
Due to max being on an art trip on this day, Kate and I will be doing it with out him.

Actors for the day;

Young Oliver - Kate williams
Oliver's mother - Christina Williams

Old Oliver - Kate williams.

So we will be first filming at the boarding school as we have to be finished before the school ends. As we have to make sure that we don't get any of the students in the shots. It's still a shame that we couldn't film inside and we will end up with a lot of difficulty when coming to edit because of the different doors or though we haven't used the front door in the filming we did on Sunday 3rd.

We will then continue to Kate's house after we have filmed at the school to shoot the last part of the sequence.
We have come up with another idea for this scene and using a dressing table so you would see her reflection in the mirror than her actual face which if he can pull it off, I think this will work very well, and could also be more dramatic.

We can then start to put in the pieces when we edit this and hopefully will make a convincing opening.

We will have to make sure we do lots of different angles just like Sunday to have enough footage so we don't miss anything.

We will shortly be uploading the practice run of the car pulling up and funny parts of our filming and clip we have taken out.

Second Permission Thursdays filming - Kate

Unfortunately we are still not aloud to film inside the school - I asked permission to film outside the  school , However this could prove difficult as the shots might not link up with the ones we took on Sunday .

Dear Mr Westlake,
We are being allowed to leave college at 1pm, and will get the 1.20 bus to Ashurst Wood. We hope to be at Brambletye  just after 2pm and finish before the end of school so we won't get in the way of children going home.
Many many thanks again for your help,
Kind regards
Katherine

On 4 Mar 2013, at 08:26, Headmaster

Dear Katharine,
Yes, that's fine. As you acknowledge, it is important that no children are in any shots.

Do you have an idea of the timings?
 Best wishes

Day 1 Filming. - Sunday 3rd March. -Kate

On Sunday 3rd of March '13 we started to film our Thriller  "Commemorate" .

To start of we planned what we were going to do in our time of filming to make sure that we didn't waste our time filming unnecessary footage- however we did film lot's of shots in different ways - OTS , Point of view - Where Helena held the camera as I walked we found it was easier than myself holding the camera at the same time. we also took lots of the first shot with the walking down the corridor so we got a variety of background and with and without the clock in the background . In our first day of filming we achieved The middle part of our film - Olivia walking down the corridor , pulling scene and gunmen  scene - we still need to film the car scene , entering the school and the scene with the newspaper. - This is planned for Thursday.

- We Changed the clock in the background and removed household object to make it look more like a school .

Through out our filming we took pictures of our set up and angles of the camera also.

-Filming point of view shot

-Camera adjustments

- going through the pulling scene,

- set up for gunmen

-Pulling scene

- Hiding place for pulling scene.

We have filmed!! - Helena

We have one more section to film which will be done on Thursday!! Everything went rather well, we have started editing, and now just waiting to film on Thursday to add to the short part we filmed.
