Evaluation - Max

1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The whole concept of a Thriller is to keep the audience guessing and wanting to know what happens next, they're unpredictable, made to create an enigma that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat.  Ellipsis plays a key part in a Thriller, eliminating all unimportant parts in the movie and holding back information from either the character or the audience.  This makes the audience pay extra attention making them interact more with what they're watching.  A Thriller should explore 'dark' themes that are not science fiction, otherwise it becomes a Horror, and Horror is difficult to pull off nowhere days.

In my opinion, Thrillers are the smartest, most brilliant of all film genres.  I think this because every detail is important, miss one detail and you might lose a whole chunk of the plot.  It's all down to the camera, sound and editing.

A certain camera's angle or movement can change the perspective of the film, moving the camera can tell the audience many things: If a character's in danger, the pace of the scene and many more techniques.  The angle can determine a character's status (a low angle for example is used at times to make a character a higher status than the other), a pan can be used to track a character whilst staying in one position and revealing more of the landscape in the shot.  An example of when we used this technique was when the car drove towards the roundabout, we revealed where the car was coming from, where it was going past and where its destination is in a shot that lasted five seconds.  Match on action is a key technique that gets the audience anticipating what going to happen next.

The editing conventions of a successful thriller include Cross Cutting, Parallel Editing and Continuity Editing:

  • Continuity editing is used to keep the story rolling with a sense of flow coherence and realism.  I believe we've done this. I think the piece flows in a way that leaves the audience guessing, there's no problem with the props we used, an example is the clock in which we changed to school time and indicated she's late (although I wish now we'd have shot some footage of the clock close up) but I believe everything we've done flows.
  • Parallel Editing is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that most of the time happen simultaneously in different locations, in this case they occasionally overlap (and both sets of characters confront each other via a phone call etc).
  • Cross Cutting is used most often used in Film Thriller to establish action occurring at the same time in two different locations, a good example is from the clip from Luther.
Sound:
  • Diegetic Sound - The Car, footsteps - These were needed to create realism and tension, plus, the audience would immediately think 'why can't we hear the car engine revving and the sound of the characters feet colliding with the floor

  • Non Diegetic / Foley - Add sound fx i.e. The screaming during the establishing shot of the school, I believe it would have been more successful without them because during the draft of the clip, it felt like it had to be in, but in the final clip it sounded corny, unnecessary and fake (Which spoilt the piece a bit) but I am still happy with what we've done

  • Added Sounds for suspense i.e. Background ticking noise (I used this because I heard it and it sounded like a countdown to the incident and also gave an obvious but effective pace to the piece)

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product turns the stereotype of privileged upper class children on its head, I mean to say as they live in their own privilege, upper class life where nothing bad ever happens to them and they get what they want all the time (as you can tell I don't have these views at all...).  The car is a new upper class Mitsubishi that is a typical posh car, this was great to use because of it's image (it was either the Mitsubishi or a Jeep looking thing and the Jeep is too...military and lower class).

'The costume fitted well with the school setting, however the Converse of the shooters seemed a bit out of place.' Scott- TeamGimli
I might slightly agree with them...the converses were the only slightly appropriate shoes available to us, but all things considered we should have been more prepared in the costume department.

We used a female main character because they are stereo-typically more innocent that men, they're natural go to gender for a damsel in distress. Our character is however more independent and challenges that stereotype

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Film distribution is the process of how films are created and connect with the audience.  A film distributor is either a person or an organization who present your film at festivals and possibly to the television or even cinemas around the world.

Possibly the BBC because it can be finished on a relatively low budget, yet it's interesting and engaging.  A good example of a low budget interesting film is The Awakening, a ghost story thriller in which Rebecca Hall plays a Psychic who is paid to investigate a haunted school during half term, and the twist is very interesting and game changing. I enjoyed it very much, because it was the small things like a bell ringing that made you really scared and tense.  I think our Thriller has the potential of doing something similar, except the ghosts are gunmen instead and the things that'll get the audiences blood pumping is the 'he's getting closer' factor. Using echoes and footsteps that hint to where the bad guy is.  Our film so far doesn't have any dialogue at all and I think as a whole film it would be a lot better if we continued with minimal dialogue, like what they did in 'Woman in Black'.

In this film it created an atmosphere so eerie and effective without music and dialogue. In the scene during Arthur's first visit to the house he explores the house and the things that make you jump the most are the sudden moments that don't involve the actual ghost.  Such as:  The blocked drain that when he tries to get water out suddenly releases a lump of disgusting muddy water that makes you jump completely because of the overly edited loud Diegetic sound of it coming out of the tap.  Also what makes you jump is a similar situation when he finds a nest that has been made in the fireplace, a chick has fallen out of it and so he puts it back in its nest when suddenly a crow flies out of the chimney and onto the window sill.

I think our film would have a lot of moments such as this because a lot can be said without saying anything.  This is why I think the BBC would be interested in this, because they don't necessarily want a Hollywood blockbuster, but an intelligent piece of work that grabs the audiences attention.

4. Who would be the audience for your media production?

I think the appropriate audience would be rated 15, because we intend that the rest of the film to be shocking, crude and a bit bloody at times.  I personally would like it to be a thriller that can be scary and edgy, it's only when the teachers start shooting people that it should be really shocking and a proper contrast to a superstitious and broad beginning.  I think given this age rating the possibilities could be endless to what we could do to make the audience sit on the edge of their seats, whereas if given a lower age rating we would be very limited to what we could do if a family went to go see it thinking there's a happy ending.  I think it's a fair rating to give it and I'd feel comfortable trying to creep an audience of an aged 15+ audience with the different Thriller techniques we can do.  Our Thriller piece also doesn't use foul language and so it could potentially be a film for all the family and they might excuse some of the other things in our film like potential violence and blood.

Also the characters are in a similar age group to the people we are targeting and so they're more relatable and if anyone older than the target watch they can remember what it was like to be a teenager.  I think we are attracting both a male and female audience because the main character is a girl (which will attract boys) and the girl is relatable (which will attract girls).  This theory has been proven because I showed it to many people of different genders and asked if they would watch the rest of the movie given a choice, which they all said they would.

5.How do you attract / address your audience?

We started with a familiar scene, Olivia was late for school which was relateable for everyone because nobody has always been on time and so it made the audience think 'where are they going with this?'.

Then we mixed it up a bit with the school shootings (which when we finished are film became a very touchy subject and no offence was meant in the making of this film).

We've made the whole scene very eerie from the beginning because of the 'ticking' that goes on during the beginning, this (which has been proven due to an interview with a few students) works because they wanted to know what the ticking was.

Finally Olivia receives a text with shocking news and leaves the plot wide open with a lot to think about.  Because it's a Thriller opening, we shouldn't explain anything what the audience wants to know because that's what grabbed their attention in the first place and they'll want to watch the rest to find out the answers to their questions.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I've learnt how to use more camera techniques than I knew how to use before, using the equipment available to me (thanks to our preliminary which was very useful to do first).  I've also learnt how effective it is to take shots from several different angles and also to keep the camera rolling no matter what happens because it can still be used.

During our editing it would have been nice to have had more footage to play around with and so I'm going to take this into consideration for next year.

I've learnt a few more techniques for Final Cut Pro, Garageband and the Macs in general (as I was at college last year doing video production I had a bit of a head start).  But our media technicians Ollie and Sophie were always there to help us when we needed them.  With Final Cut Pro I found out how to slow down/speed up a clip which came in very handy when we were pacing the clip.  The Sounds we used from Garageband would have been made by us creating Foleys, but in the time we had left it would have been harder to come up with a school bell for instance, or gun shots and a crowd screaming.

For our lighting the actual light that was shone didn't really mix well with interior of our set and so we found it was better to do I without the actual lamps.

Blogger was great because whenever we needed feedback our teachers would always give us tips and help.  We used multimedia techniques to make it interesting and I'd definitely recommend it for other subjects to use.

7. Looking back at your Preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

Our first video was called 'The Only Way is Sussex' based on the reality TV shows 'The Only Way is Essex' and 'Made in Chelsea'.  We started brainstorming in the lesson, from a classic stalker clip to a natural meeting with friends.  In the end we thought of a quick, easy scene to do that involved just a couple of lines and a few camera shots. In the end it took an hour and a half to film, it would have been quicker to film but we had a member of our team down for personal reasons, Kate, however she wrote the dialogue with Helena and did some paper work so it added up.  Meanwhile I was drawing the storyboard and examples of shots we were going to use.

But all in all I think we did a successful piece, we did a full run-through of the lines every time we turned on the camera so that we'd have a variety of different shots to use, which we should have done in our Thriller opening which would have made it a lot more interesting to use all of those different camera angles.  However there were a couple of continuity problems we kept running in to like the clock that's time was not of school time and would change every so often, but after we thought of that we changed the time.  So I've learnt from this, our editing has improved a lot since the beginning, it has gotten smoother and the flow has improved along with the continuity.  Our titling was simple which made it clever and also made it more possible for time to go quicker between each title. There was one day that I couldn't attend filming as I was at an Art trip, however to make up for this I wrote an over 1000 word synopsis we could use for the rest of the film.

Synopsis:

Commemorate
A young Olive Collins is late for school one morning; she gets a lift in and walks into school.  When walking in she’s stopped by his friend, Liam (whose father is the history teacher), and they hide in a corner, a gunman walks past them and walk into the assembly hall.  The sound of gunshots and panic emerges from the hall.
A few years later, the school finally reopens and Olive struggles when she goes back to school after her father has had her home schooled since the incident and sent her to a Psychiatrist, whom she tells everything to.  She’s still friends with Liam, but they keep their distance because they remind each other too much of what happened.  She’s still tormented by flashbacks of what happened, one flashback is of her and Oliver walking into the assembly hall, which is filled with bodies of their friends, but no teachers.  She follows the path of a Photographer and takes pictures wherever she goes.  She takes photos of a school production called “And so it ends”, it uses strobe lights in the main hall, she helps the actors put the props in the school cellar, including a pair of crutches, which happens to be the props room as well.  Then she stumbles into the security room and takes photos of the controls for her project, but the Gatekeeper finds her and shouts for her to leave.  Olive remembers him being there at the incident, she then becomes obsessed with the idea that the Gatekeeper was the key antagonist.   She starts following the gatekeeper and takes pictures of everything he does.
She collects what she thinks is a substantial amount of evidence in a large folder, such as old newspaper reports about the school dating all the way back to the First World War. One article about a teacher whom had committed suicide and a teacher driven mad and killed his students. She eventually tells her Psychiatrist everything and he does his best at telling her that it’s just not true and it’s all in her head.  But Olive is still convinced and goes to the Gatekeepers house to find evidence; she gets caught by the Gatekeeper, who calls the police on her.  Olive escapes but gets chased by the police, when she gets caught by a police officer (the officer who actually was at the incident after it happened and looked after Olive and Liam) they remember each other and the Police Officer lets her off with a warning.
She goes to school as normal the next day, when she’s in History she starts thinking more in depth about the incident and realises something. The History teacher is Liam’s father.  Where was he when the incident occurred?  After the lesson she confronts the History teacher at his office, the history teacher tells him that he was on holiday with the family.  BUT WHY WASN’T LIAM WITH HIM ON HOLIDAY?! She asks herself.
She confronts Liam, asking where his father was when the incident occurred.  Liam says he can’t tell her.  They are interrupted by the Gatekeeper who shouts at them to get to class, when they get to class, Olive gives a note to Liam saying to meet her at the School Cellar’s after school, there Oliver plans to interrogate him.
The Police Officer is having a meeting with Olive’s Psychiatrist, who shows the folder Olive gave to the Psychiatrist.  Whilst looking through the folder starts remembering stuff that actually happened at the incident.  He starts connecting dots, starts remembering seeing the teachers all alive and well after the incident, he starts to get convinced that Olive is on to something.
At the School Cellars, Olive tries to forcefully get information from Liam, the stress has got to her and she has a tantrum.  The History teacher walks into the cellar, he has a gun.  He shoots Olive in the leg and leaves her to bleed out, the headmaster calls him on the radio and asks if he’s ready for stage one; the history teacher then takes Liam and locks the doors.
The Police Officer starts driving to the school to pick up Olive, to see what else he thinks she knows.
The Headmaster calls for a school assembly and the teachers start loading their guns in the changing rooms.  The halls are flooded with schoolchildren who are dreading another boring assembly, the teachers then lock all entrances to the school.
Olive lies down in a pool of blood, she slowly reaches in her pocket and starts playing music on her phone hoping someone will hear it and also as comfort as she lies in pain in pitch black.
The Police Officer gets to the school and walks to the Main entrance, it’s locked and the French teacher guarding the hall sees him through the windows.  The Police Officer starts running towards the Police car to call for back up.  But two teachers are standing by the car with guns.  He hides behind the corner and thinks of running through the field to escape and call for help.  But he hears music coming from the Cellar and opens it to see Olive lying down in a pool of blood.  She’s lost a lot of blood.
The whole school is listening to the headmaster; he’s giving a long boring, ceremonial type speech people.
The police officer covers Olive’s wounds and tells her to stay there whilst he goes to try and escape to call for back up.  Olive remembers the first time she went into the control room; she crawls over towards her bag and gets her camera out, the picture of the controls in the control room.  A switch that automatically opens up the electronic doors, sees the theatre strobe light switch and gets an idea.  She looks next to her, the crutches she put in there.
The Police Officer runs across the field and escapes.
The headmaster is still continuing with the long speech, Olive just about makes it to the control room and looks out towards the hall.  She’s shocked when she sees that the teachers pull out the Gatekeeper for their first sacrifice.  She’s frozen in fear and the teachers kill the Gatekeeper.  There are screams from all the students.  Olive opens all the doors with the flick of a switch, turns the lights off and turns on the strobe lights to confuse the teachers.  She shouts in the microphone “Run”.
(Long Montage, the teachers kill as many students as they can but most get away.  Police cars drive to the school with guns, a few teachers run to the control room to kill Olive, Officers with guns storm the school, a teacher sees Olive, an officer fires a gun.  A poster of the play fades in and IT ALL ENDS.

Blog:

The blog started out being pretty basic with not a lot of detail, but we found that if a situation suddenly changed during our filming or in the process of planning we'd put it up on the blog with a video or a photo.  Early on we found the location of where we filmed the outside of the school - Brambletye Private School - and so we made sure that it was immediately on the blog and we realised that things like this would make the blog a lot more interesting.  We had a lot to write about when we did the pulling experiment around the corner (however on the actual day there was no proper corner that we needed for this to work, but we did what we could, also Kate was wearing heels on the day which made this really tricky in the end).  But our idea was great and it really shows.  We worked with best intentions and our story line (I'm almost confident) hasn't been done before and we are very proud of what we've done.

Evaluation - Helena Grundy

Evaluation  - Helena Grundy

1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Conventionsof a thriller are to thrill the spectator. To do this you must have a realisticstory, like ours we have the story of the shooting at the school. This hadrecently happened and was in the news and that is how we came up with the storylooking at news articles. You have to make the story exciting and engage theaudience. I think our story contains excitement, it has suspense when Oliviagoes into school, and also the ending of our opening is a cliff hanger as shereads the text and it makes you want to know what happens when she goes back toschool. I think this was a very good technique and it doesn’t seem to be acommon technique in thrillers its more for dramas and TV programs, or thoughsometimes you get them at the end of the movie which makes you want them tocreate a second film, this could be very good for publicity and also away ofmaking money.

Athriller has to explore ‘Dark’ themes and not science fiction as this wouldmake it a horror. Ours is defiantly a thriller and not a horror, it exploresthe dark theme of a shooting in a school, and a young girl starts to search andfigure out who this cooperate was who did such a horrific thing to change herlife. The only issue with this topic is that its quite a strong subject and itcould cause offense to people who have been involved or know someone who hasbeen involved in a similar thing. This is why we decided that for the shootingpart it would only be sound and the outside of the school as it would make itso gory and it would also be hard to pull of and hard to construct. We also hadthe issue with not being able tot o film in the school and so it would be hardto find a hall and a lot of people to use. This would also make our film an 18as it wouldn’t be appreciate of the younger generation,

Youmust keep the audience guessing using the enigma code.  The enigma code is where you hold backinformation from the viewer or characters.
Anotherthing that could help with this is iconography of suspense: props may add tothe characterization.

Enigmais also creating mystery to add to the atmosphere of the film.
Anotherthing that creates mystery and suspense is restricted narration omniscience.Omniscience – all knowing, all seeing. – relates to the knowledge conveyed bythe camera or voice-over.

Thenarrative is always shown in chronological order of: Normality-Equiblium,Disruption – Des Equiblium and Bestore- Closure. This is known as TodursTheory. Causality (cause and effect) can also help make the story not inchrological order. Meaning one event leading to another.

Narrativein films is reffering to the order in which a story is told. And the overallstructure of a story being told. Narrative can be used as a way of controllingthe information released to the audience about what is going on in the story. For example, thriller and horror films will frequyently ‘hold back’ informationto create a puzzle and engage the intrest of the audience. This is the use of ‘restricted narration’ and it places audience in the same postion as a confusedcharacter. The restricted narration of a story is created in part by use ofsubjective camera work.
Onthe other hand unrestricted narration is where the audience knows orunderstands more than the character. In literature this is called ‘omniscience’and is created in film using objective camerawork. Many films will use bothtechniques.

Thereare 4 aspects of technical codes;

camera contains one very important element, Movement/Angles. This convention helps to give a film its thriller genre, as different camera angles create different senses of body language and emotions. for example when you do point of view you feel and see what the character is feeling through the motion of the camera.
of thrillera films also use Camera Angles such as facial close up shots and mid – range shots. An example of a close up was used in our film when Leah turns to Olivia to be quite.

These help to show facial emotions/expressions and also shows body language, which helps to show tension, and helps the audience to feel as if they are in the film and makes the ask questions. Camera Movements also helps make the audience feel this. the film. For example when the camera moves the camera about, they try to mimic the characters breathing, this makes the audience feel like they are the ones that are breathing. Another Camera Movement is tracking, this is a fast paced camera movement, which can also be known as a Dolly shot. when something fast happens in a film it creates the audience's heart beats to go faster and adds to the suspense and makes the audience ask questions on what's happening next.

The other important convention that makes up a thriller is Editing, this gives films things like quick cuts. These quick cuts can also be seen in films such a psycho, when the women in the shower is getting stabbed there is a lot of fast cut, as it shows different angles of her being stabbed. This makes the film fast paced and makes it more tense. Another one is fade to black. This has been used in the  our film when we did our credits.

It makes the film more suspense, because you don’t know what is going to come up next, its almost like a pause in the film.

This also contains very important elements which make up a thriller. For example the different music themes produce create different  moods and feel for thriller films. For example jumpy and quite scary music which is played in different scenes, can be named as themes/stings as they produce different moods and settings for thriller films. Other sound elements which are used to give the films their thrilling genres are; diegetic/ non-diegetic sounds, synchronous/asynchronous sounds, ambient sounds etc…..

The one thing I haven't motioned yet was Mise en scene. Mise en Scene contains a few important elements which help add thrill to films and also help to add suspense. Lighting has to be dark to help give the film a gloomy mood and helps to make the audience feel more suspense towards the film. like in our film it was filmed on a rainy day which made a gloomy feel to our film, or though the inside part could of been made slightly darker as its quite light i think that if it was made darker i would be made creepy and more scary. we still had the old school to add to the creepiness of it.

Another thing which also makes the opening off a thriller stick to its thrilling genre is props, as in thriller films there is a lot of sharp objects and weapons like glass, knives, guns etc.. like in our film we used guns. This shows the audience that the objects are going to be used to kill someone or something. The set design/ location also helps the genre of the film stick to thriller, as the right set/location such as a gloomy warehouse or dark woods give a thrilling film as it shows mystery and suspense/tension towards the audience.

'I enjoyed the opening and was intreseted in what would happen next; I thiought that it could easily develop into a deeper story from what we were shown and fitted well as an opening'.Scott- TeamGimli

'Your opening is good at setting up the scene and ideas of the film, and leaves the audience asking lots of questions about what is happening, which is good.' stella

2. how does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represents the upper class children. Our film was set in a boarding school which means the surroundings and children were very posh. You can also see this from our characters outfits. They are both well presented. the posh school type also added good effect.- Dan Johnstone

The surroundings were nice and also shows that it's in a nice area and out of the roads.

This car also shows that it's an upper class family as this car is not and old car falling apart is an expensive well looked after car.

Except for the gun men they were so posh and were made to look like their were all in black how ever this didnt work as well as planned.
'The costume fitted well with the school setting, however the Converse of the shooters seemed a bit out of place.' Scott- TeamGimli

The costumes should of been thought about a bit more and maybe more casual so they stood out more? This is something we would have to change.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Film distribution know as' Invisible art' is how films are brought to life and connect to an audience.
film distribution is the way you securing the placement of the film on an exhibition screening and for home viewing. A distributor is an individual or organisation who will represent your film at festivals and markets around the world and who will attempt to sell it to television (including terrestrial, cable and satellite), airlines and other companies that show short films.
an example of distributors we could use are;

-Dynamo
Dynamo is an online distrubuter wich Reach a global audience, publish programs on any site, and get paid for every purchase.
site.dynamoplayer.com

the only bad-side to this is we are only hitting one type of distributions (online or though online has become more popular.)

LIONSGATE

Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation (or Lionsgate) is a North American entertainment company. The company was formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, and its headquartered in Santa Monica, California. As of 2012, it is the most commercially successful independent film and television distribution company in North America and the seventh most profitable movie studio.
As lions gate is very popular and is used a lot in film this would cost a lot of money. This wouldn't be as particle as expect due to cost.

SODA PICTURES

Soda Pictures is a UK-based film distributor of art house, independent and world cinema. They have provided distribution for many award-winning films such as Frostbite (Winner "Best Film" Fantasporto 2006), Into Great Silence & Old Joy.
Soda pictures is a private distributor. This could be cheaper than a bigger company an it is Uk based.

4. Who would be the audience for your media production?

Our audience we aimed for with our thriller was 13-17, and females and males. We certificates our thriller at 15 as our film doesn't show a lot of violence or blood. It also doesn't contain any swearing or rude words. We aimed it at 13-17 as its set in a school which the characters would be ages between 12-16 and so would the viewers.
Or though Harry potter wasn't a thriller, it's was still set in a school and had a similar age rating even though most age groups watch it. Harry potter just goes to show that aiming your film at the right audience and also aiming at a similar age group to the characters can help, as the viewers will be able to relate in someway. "According to Warner Bros., 54 percent of deathly hallows part 2's viewers were female, compared to 57 percent for the last movie, and 45 percent were under 25 years old, compared to 56 for the last movie." - Box office Mojo.

This shows that we've aimed a the right age group or though as it say for age their was still around 50% that were above the age of 25. Also it's about 50/50 for gender which backs up why we decided on both genders.
'The film would appeal to teenagers.'- Stella.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

We start with the Equiblium when Olivia is late for school. Wechose this as its something our audience can relate to. I would say everyoneteenaged/child has been late to school at least once and even adults are latesometimes.
It’s also a normal situation so nothing to abnormal about it.

Then the Des Equiblium - The shooting at the school.

People can relate to this via the news as it has been recently inthe news.
The use of sound will attract the audience and audience will feelemotion and sensitivity towards this.

It’s then followed by the Des Equilium when Olivia receives a textfrom a close friend telling her school is re-opening.

This is also another shocking piece of news and this will alsoattract the audience and will can suspense and emotion for the audience. Almostlike their there.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Sorry if this video is bad quality due to blogger only taking certain files. I have had to compress this file by a lot.
.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task , what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

So we started with ‘Only way is sussex’ based onthe popular tv shows ‘Only way is Essex’ and ‘Made in Chelsea’.

When we stared our planning as a group it wasn’thard for us to come up with something. We need a story line which was quick a punchy.Kate and I came up with the dialogue that would relate to an audience and wassimilar to what we had heard on the other TV series. We didn’t go into a lot ofdetail in this which was quite disappointing due to Kate unfortunate illnessKate was in hospital and was unviable to attend our filming day. So it was downto max and I do our best. I think that we did really well between us. Wesometimes had to leave the camera running and leave it whilst we acted but wedid get a lot of shots and angles which I think we lacked in our thrilleropening as we came across continuity problems. I also think that I have learnta lot. I did a lot of filming when we did commemorate due to Max being at aschool trip on the only day we could film which was very unfortunate, it wasdown to kate and to do our best which we worked very well together to make suremax would also be happy with our choice we had to make on the day. I think Ihave learnt a lot on the camera side as I’ve been their through all of ourfilming.

I think that as a group we have come really far,our editing skills got much better and smoother. Our camera skills were muchbetter. We thought more about the filming and shot sizes. We explored more withsetting and we defiantly learnt more on sound and using garage band which canchange a whole film. I think we worked really well as a group. We came up withsome amazing ideas and this really shows.

Our blogstarted of boring and not much interaction. We eventually made that much betterand more interesting and personal which we are all very proud of. We used a lotof collages, photos videos. One of the things that was very beneficial was thepulling scene experiment. We did a lot of theses and it really helped a lot. Westarted of filming one shoot and we just kept adding shoots which made it morenatural and exciting to watch, I think that our actual version wasn’t as goodas our practice due to the pace the actors acted in the scene but we stillmanage to make it work and It is a very suspenseful part of our movie.

Another thing we have kept to is the style of titling, both times we went for a standard font and on top of a picture image. I think it worked well both tes and it's almost our signature style of titling. Or though I think we might of been able to try something more adventurous for our commemorate film I still feel that we work to our best and came up with something original and unique. As far as I'm swear there aren't many films that have shootings at schools and that turns into an investigation from the child who witnessed the men and noise.

Funny Games U.S - Helena

This thriller is about two psychopathic young men take a family hostage in their cabin.

This opening scene is very similar to what we wanted to create, with the driving somewhere and shoot from inside and out. We were also going to do talking over like this but instead we left it blank as it worked better.

As you can see with this titling scene its a strong colour which is red through out. Red is also know for danger and also that symbol of blood. I think that works well for a thriller, gives a good contrast with the green trees and surroundings too.

The titling is really simple and the letters are big bold text. I think not having a complicated swirl font works rather well as I don't think it would work as well as it wouldn't go with the type of film.

The title appears just after the music changes from opera to heavy metal and it just jumps out on screen.

I like the way it so simple and not complicated I think for our film we will keep to simple titles and credits. I also think we will go for a bold type to bring out our title more to make it stand out.

1. In what ways does your media product use , develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?.

The main conventions of a successful Thriller are :

-Suspense , Mystery, Realism  , Dark , Connection, Twist, Atmospheric, Fast Paced ,Exciting -Engaging Audience.

-Thrill the audience by exploring dark themes , however avoiding science fiction as this would make the film a horror NOT a Thriller.

-Keep the audience guessing - The Enigma Code (holding back information from either the character or the audience).

-Enigma- create mystery adding to the audience's feelings.

-All successful Thrillers illustrate the chronological order of  : Normality-Equibilum , Disruption-Des equbilum and Restore-Closure. ( this is known in the media world as Todrov's Theory)
( with collage app show these through opening norm and disruption)

Editing Conventions of successful Thriller :

-Continuity editing used for sense ,flow coherence and realism.

-Parallel cutting used to connect 2 characters or places simultaneous action.

-Cross cutting used to connect 2 or more characters and to create SUSPENCE.

Camera Conventions of a successful Thriller:

-Tight Framing to restrict view - called Restricted Narration -i.e  where only parts of the body is concealed with ECU - adding suspense and to the audience - this will add mystery - it can be used to disguise characters of their identity- creating an enigma Code

- Canted - Distorted P.O.V shots - Personal and more dramatic - also excitement for the audience.

-Hand held Camera - Realism

Sound Conventions of a successful Thriller:

-Diegetic Realistic sounds - Cars and Walking

- Non Diegetic / Foley - Add sound fx

-Added Sounds for suspense

Our Product : Commemorate

For our Thriller Commemorate we aimed to use as many of the key words  in just our opening to engage the audience and leave them wanting more.
The Key aspects we have incorporated  are :

-"Exploring Dark themes" : The Storyline for our Thriller is very dark and a topic that has been in the news very recently , we thought that this would be an interesting idea - By this I mean the shootings in America ,Although it is a tough topic and we are in no means making light of the subject we were just exploring ideas through the current world news - to create the realism.

-Mystery and Enigma code : The Gunmen are our real Enigma as the audience is unsure of who they are and  if they belong to the school or are outside visitors - We intended the gunmen to be Teachers however this was unclear to their costume and age .This scene would look better if the Gunmen were older and if it was more obvious that they were teachers I.e Props , maybe less obvious bad- guy clothing such as Smarter trouser wear and shirts instead of t-shirts -This would all work in to create a over all good mise en scene for our thriller.

-This was picked up by our class evaluation

The costume fitted well with the school setting, however the Converse of the shooters seemed a bit out of place.
-Scott- TeamGimli

This Photograph from filming day 1  indicates the issue- We needed to of thought more about the gunmen's costumes and to create a balanced Mise en scene.

Our Thriller Opening already has started to show Chronological order of the 3 steps - Equibilum   and Disequbilum  and then what is seen as Closure - but this is a twist to have the audience guessing again - the story line is still In des equibilum.

Our Order

1. Equibilum - Late for school - Driving down to school.

2. Des equibium - Gunmen shooting in school causing chaos .Carrying on into the next part of the opening after the title page.

Editing: Commemorate

-Commemorate consisted of Continuity editing - to create realism. As a group we wanted our Thriller opening to be as realistic as possible and flow making it easy for our audience to follow.

-Our feedback from our target audience agreed that this worked well.

The variety of shots is really good and so is the continuity. The shot where the two girls look up and see the boys is especially good. Overall a good opening, which is intriguing and sets up the story very clearly, without giving too much away.
-Stella

Camera : Commemorate

- While Helena and I were filming on the second day of filming (the day in which Max was unable to attend) we discussed how important it is to keep the set up of the camera tight as to bring all focus on the character in shot for example tracking the car going down to the school and tracking the character out of the car and into the school.

-ECU were used to distort the Gunmen's identity - to create an atmospheric feel to the shots impacting on our audience's emotions and adrenalin  .

-POV shots where a last minuet idea  - we agreed it would add to the enigma of the thriller and  whole setting creating it to be more  mysterious and realistic. We wanted to take full advantage of the setting around the outside of  school as we wanted it to create a great impact on the audience.

-Feed back from audience agreed with our camera work!.

Good POV shots, 2 shots and panning worked very well with this, the posh school type also added great effect.
-Dan Johnstone

Sound:Commemorate

- Our first initial Idea was to have no sound at all until the shooting and screaming then fade to black with our title "Commemorate" - this was inspiration from an episode of BBCs "Sherlock"

http://www.free-tv-video-online.me/player/videoweed.php?id=88b63bab0439b - No copy on youtube found this link is from Project Free TV.

However when it came to adding sound we found that the our opening it did not fit with the all round image of our thriller - so instead we used non diegetic atmospheric background music creating the sound of ticking of a clock indicating that the character is late and on her way to a school - Foleys were used to emphasise this also , the Foleys consisted of a school bell ringing and children talking - indicating a school environment. However once again while finding the right sound we realise that we could of put even more emphasis on it , It is unfortunate that we didn't have enough time to create the music ourselves but I believe that the sound we found on the internet worked just as well.

http://www.stonewashed.net/sfx.html - The website that we used

Our own Foleys that we created where
-the sound of the car driving up to the school
- sound of doors opening
-walking
-door opening in second part of the opening
-phone vibrating.

Our only problem with these were matching them up so they fitted with the onscreen image we found that the walking was the most difficult , to over come this we needed to making the Foleys at the same time as our filming . We found that when we speeded up the pulling scene we needed to speed up the  sound that went with it.

The Foleys we copied from the internet were:
-background ticking sound
-school bell
-children noise in background
-shooting
- scream

The Copied Foleys I found were a bit too unrealistic - I liked the background music and the school bell also the Children's voices , but I think that the screaming would of had more emphasis and a better effect if we had made them ourselves , unfortunately we did not have time to create them , also like our walking it was out of time.

-Our Target Audience shared their honest opinion of our use of Foleys , We have taken this into account

The use of music at the beginning is effective and builds tension, but more diegetic sound could be used to build the tension even more, for example the sound of footsteps on the stair could be emphasized more to create atmosphere. Also I'm not sure if the shooting sound effect works. The shooting sound does but the screaming doesn't really work as it sounds likes a computer generated sound clip, and doesn't really sound realistic.
-Stella

The sound fitted well and was synced in-time if many Foleys were added. The music at the start built suspense but felt a bit more Horror than Thriller; however, given the event of the shooting it could be appropriate.
-Scott

Nice fading mixed with creepy music added a mysterious feel and the titling was a good titling.
-Dan Johnstone

Reviewing Thrillers

-For homework we were asked to review and annotate 4 thriller openings for inspiration I reviewed

-Stormbraker

-Oceans 13

-Sweeny Todd

-No Country for old men

Out of the Thrillers I reviewed Stormbraker inspired me with the setting of a school and how everything he says that boring about his life is a lie its the opposite , this inspired me even more to use a school setting as its uncommon that something like a shooting would take place.
The titling for No Country For Old Men is very similar to Commemorate its simple and creates an impact.
http://foundationportfolio1343.blogspot.co.uk/2013_02_01_archive.html

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups ?

 - Commemorate has a clear demonstration  of "class" , it represents middle to upper class.

- We wanted this to come across clearly in our opening.

-To make it clear our props and setting  we used indicated an upper class private school.

-Our Setting Brambletye Private School

- The Car :The make and generation of the car shows wealth and would fit in well with the private school.
Good - the Volvo is good as this does appear to be a private school which suggest kids from a affluent background so you want an expensive and relatively new car as the car being driven by the parent - it is all part of the characterisation of the pupils.
-Andrew Mann - Comment on Blog post

-I put together the costume at last minuet as we had to change gender of the main character
-for young Olivia her costume was a basic  smart school uniform.

The costume fitted well with the school setting
-scott
- Even smaller detail we wanted to connect with middle class even in part 2 of our opening

- The use of a Blackberry phone shows wealth and modern technology , also the setting for the second part as the room has a balcony and interesting scenery

-We filmed outside Brambletye school we asked for permission from the head teacher I wrote a letter and sent e-mails we had difficulty finding time to fit in with the school we intended to film both inside and out , however we couldn't find an appropriate time to film in the school .

- I connected the time period of the school with my neighbours house we filmed the inside and shooting scene in her hall way , we were very pleased with how well they linked together! .

 - Our opening also represents the main character as Female. The lead character in all of the films I reviewed on the blog were Male , at first this was not intended in our film but now we see it as a good thing as it makes it more  unique and interesting  , I also found it easier connecting props , costume , hair and make up  to a female character making the mise en scene of the character more connected.

-The lead character is represented in a good light , you don't get to find out much about her or her identity , only in the second part of the opening can she be her self / dress how she wants . Her room setting doesn't give much away about her. All the audience can tell is that she's a teenager , feminine. these are shown from her costume and environment setting

- We have represented our lead character the way we have because it is different to have a very feminine lead character in a thriller , most lead female characters are presented as having a very masculine hobby or dressing in a masculine way. - "Lara Croft Tomb Rader" and "The Girl With the dragon tattoo".

- We have not made it clear to where she stands with power as she is a school girl and has no power.
 - Something that would of made our thriller even more interesting is if our gunmen were female , this would of added more controversy to our plot as a female would be less suspected as a killer and it is unknown in the film world, I can't think of any thrillers in which the killer has been a Female , however we didn't think of this at the time  yet it would of been a great idea.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why ?

4.Who would be the audience for your media product?

 "Commemorate"

-Our product Commemorate is easy to understand yet very dark theme. Our target audience would be aimed at :

- ages between 11-17+
- certificate  15.

The Film would appeal to teenagers.
-Stella

The stereotype of  our audience :

-Female - As the film has no fast car chases , no gore and a simple storyline.

-Young - Our Character Olivia is young so the audience can relate to the character.

-Lifestyle .- none in particular however maybe the audience member more into faster paced films rather than romantic comedies.

-I have gathered together a few questions to ask a  member of the target audience.

-Here is some general background information about my chosen audience member.

-Gender :Female

-Age: 17

-Occupation : Full time college student

-Preferred genre of film : Dramatic  , meaningful and easy storyline.

The Questions that she will be asked

- Over all what certificate do you think Commemorate will be if it was fully produced?

-Do you feel that you connect with the character ? If so why ?

-Does this film fit in with the target genre?

-What was your favourite part?

-Where do you think we could improve?

-Is the storyline easy to follow ?

5.How do you attract / address your audience?

 section 1 - Equibilum

Late for school

-something the audience can connect with.

-addresses the audience as nothing abnormal.

 Section 2-Des Equibilum
Shooting at school

-shocking new theme and ties in with current news.
-use of sound
-uses audiences emotions
-attracts the audience uses suspense

Quoted as favourite part by audience feed back from question 4 video.

Section 2-Des Equibilum
receiving text about school reopening
- again Shocking
-Use of Ellipsis
-Connection with Audience and causes suspense

- Our sound has a leaving effect on the audience - However the sound is where we have been told we need to work on - I agree as we needed to add extra emphasis in the sound of the shooting and the screaming

-The theme to our storyline is shocking and as it is  lead issue in the USA - Shooting in schools

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbine_High_School_massacre

-We use our lead character to connect with the audience as our target audience is selected to be a similar age to the character - 15+
(Own Videos failed to upload)

My Script

We attracted our audience by using lots of point of view shots ,such as when the main character is in the car driving down to the school . we used point of view shots to add emphasis on the character so that it would reflect on the audience adding tension.
Another point of view shot we used was when the two young female characters were hiding and watching the gunmen walk down the stairs , we thought this would create extra suspense and tension.
We did create some restricted narrative , however this is resolved by our use of foley sounds. going back to question 1 the gunmen is where we needed to work on our mise en scene.

6.What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The technology we used for Commemorate :

HD Camera- We used the HD handheld camera to film our whole film, I found it very easy to use and is very high quality , Battery life was also very good , we had no problems.

Tripod- The tripod was used to ensure that our camera was still while filming the still walking shots , the tripod was very simple to use.

Blog - Blogger has been used since the start , I really enjoy using blogger to create our blogs for media.

Mac- We used the Apple mac to upload our videos to final cut and grageband also to our blog .

Camera -We used a Nikon d3100 to take record of us filming so that we would be able to create blog posts easier about what we have been doing with our allocated time.

Final Cut-We used final cut to edit our film together , I personally found final cut really difficult to use , I need to practise more , out of our group Helena was the best at editing.

Garageband-Garage band we used to create the sound for our final film , we created all of our foleys and off screen music through garage band.

7.Looking back at your preliminary task , what do you feel you have learned  in the progression from it to the full product?

"Only Way Is Sussex" and "Commemorate"

- In  December 2012 as a group we produced our first film "The Only way is Sussex" , we based it around the popular scripted reality TV dramas such as "Made In Chelsea" and "The Only way is Essex"

- I was there for the planning lessons up to the day we had to film where unfortunately I became unwell and had to go into Hospital , So I personally don't feel I had my part In the creation of this task , However I made up for it in our planning lessons by helping create the dialogue and shot sizes.

- Since "The only way Is Sussex" it is clear that our filming techniques are better and our use of final cut has become allot smother also the sound quality and use of setting, these features I am happy to say that I was apart of and as a group we have benefited from working together as a group and sharing thoughts while editing.

-Over all our framing has become allot neater for example -

This split screen contrasts commemorate and only way is Sussex simple standard shot , commemorate uses the whole space and is straight in the middle.
The only way is Sussex is at a canted angle and does not use the whole space.

-we have also created more interesting shots such as using high angle shots also developed the set up of certain scenes such as the pulling scene , we practised in class twice with two different ways the first in one simple move the second in lots of single shots. The second time worked allot better than the single moved , if we hadn't practised it the scene wouldn't of worked.

<practise 1
                                                 final >

-when it came to creating Commemorate we had learnt in class how to use different sound types , in T.O.W.I.S we hadn't learnt how important sound is to a film , when looking back at t.o.w.i.s , there are many things that we could of done better how ever at the stage we were still figuring out how to use everything.

-Same as sound our titling has changed, for Commemorate we had viewed different TV Thriller dramas to get different interesting ideas ,for Commemorate our titling was set out as black screen with white text scrolling across the bottom this form of titling was allot more original than ours for t.o.w.i.s , the titling we used for that was found from final cut and had already been produced.

- Our Blogging has become allot more interesting , we now have pictures , experiments , video experiments , collages and reviews of TV shows and other Films. The experiment I enjoyed creating the  most was the Blood Handprints although we didn't get to use them  , I feel it was still beneficial to our blog .The experiments of the pulling scene really helped us create a flowing sequence to the scene , we experimented with the pulling scene twice the first time we did it in one shot , the second time we used lots of shots from different angles. for the actual film we used lots of shots so then it fitted together well and created a more natural and exciting scene for the audience.
